At first, it’s a furious beat, metronomic and obstinate, as if to bite and jostle. Then a nasty funky-technoide riff settles in, played on a vintage Moog. With heated tires, QONIAK can let loose. And “letting loose” for Vincent Membrez (synth) and Lionel Friedli (drums) means imagining themselves in a secret lab and behaving like slightly crazy iamese scientists. They turn the knobs of an 80s Pro-One keyboard at random and see what happens. They take contemporary jazz and dissect it with techno-industrial blades, math-rock scalpels, superimposed tempos, or rhythmic breaks borrowed from Meshuggah. One foot in Area 51, the other in the underground of Stranger Things, « experiment belly to the ground, » proclaims QONIAK! And the appetite does the rest.
